Inorganic forms of magnesium are bound with mineral salts (carbonate, chloride oxide, sulfate) and in organic forms, it is bound to molecules such as amino acids (glycinate, taurate) and organic acids (citrate, malate, lactate, aspartate). The absorption pathways of these different forms are different. It has been shown that organic forms are absorbed more efficiently from the intestinal tract.
Magnesium amino acid compounds behave differently when compared to other organic magnesium compounds. The bonds between magnesium and amino acids are stronger,more stable, and survive longer in the bloodstream. Magnesium–amino acid compounds are transported into the cell via dipeptide channels. There are many more dipeptide channels in the gut than ion channels. The stable bonds of magnesium–amino acid compounds protect magnesium from chemical reactions that may lead to unabsorbed precipitates
That’s probably also the reason why magnesium-amino acid compounds are less likely to cause diarrhea. And the final conclusion:
(1)magnesium acetyl taurate increases brain magnesium levels independent of dose; both low and high doses are equally effective;
(2)magnesium citrate compounds increase muscle magnesium levels in only after high-dose administration; and
(3)administration of divided high-dose daily magnesium compounds does not sufficiently increase tissue magnesium levels
